Commercial Refrigerator Cooling Unevenly in Hallandale Beach — Airflow Problem Fixed

The Service Call

A Hallandale Beach restaurant contacted us after employees noticed something unusual with one of their reach-in refrigerators.

Products stored on the lower shelves felt properly chilled, but containers near the top were noticeably warmer. The refrigerator was running, the compressor was cycling, and the digital display did not show an obvious temperature problem.

Because only part of the cabinet was affected, the staff initially thought the doors were being opened too often during service.

But the temperature difference continued even during slower periods.

Diagnosing the Problem

I checked actual product temperatures at several points inside the cabinet instead of relying only on the display.

The lower section was cooling normally, while the upper shelves were several degrees warmer.

Next, I inspected the evaporator, fan operation, air passages, door seals, and cabinet loading.

The evaporator fan motor was still running, but it had become weak and was no longer moving enough air through the refrigerator. Some of the return airflow was also restricted by product stored too close to the rear vents.

The refrigeration system could produce cold air, but it was not circulating that air evenly throughout the cabinet.

Here’s What We Did

I replaced the weak evaporator fan motor, cleared the obstructed airflow path, and inspected the fan wiring and evaporator area.

We then reorganized the test load to keep the supply and return vents open and ran the refrigerator through several complete cooling cycles.

Temperatures were checked on the upper, middle, and lower shelves.

After the repair, the temperature difference between sections disappeared and the refrigerator maintained consistent cooling throughout the cabinet.

Warning Signs of an Airflow Problem

Uneven airflow may be developing if you notice:

  • One shelf is warmer than the others
  • Products near the top spoil faster
  • The refrigerator display looks normal despite warm food
  • The evaporator fan sounds weaker or louder than usual
  • Frost appears near the evaporator
  • Temperature takes longer to recover after the door opens

A commercial refrigerator can still appear to be working while only part of the cabinet is holding a safe temperature.

Why the Actual Product Temperature Matters

The control sensor measures temperature at one location.

It cannot always tell you what is happening on every shelf.

That is why checking several areas with a reliable thermometer can reveal a circulation problem before the refrigerator stops cooling completely.
